Congress Approves Bill for Veterans to Obtain VA-Issued ID Cards
Congress recently approved a bill that would allow honorably discharged veterans to receive official identification cards from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Currently, some veterans are required to carry documentation to prove their veteran status. These documents contain personal information such as birth date and Social Security numbers. The decision to approve the bill was unanimous and many supporters feel that this change will make it easier for veterans to prove their military service and minimize the threat of identity theft. Veterans will be required to pay a small fee to obtain an ID card, VA will determine at a later date. The bill now waits to be signed into law by the President. No time frame has been set yet for when the first ID cards might be issued.
