Why You Should Have An Agent Orange Registry Health Exam

Why You Should Have An Agent Orange Registry Health Exam

As the U.S. military worked to draw out the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War, it sprayed the now infamous Agent Orange herbicide over all the jungle foliage. What happened was that our troops were exposed to this extremely poisonous herbicide and it seems that the effects will be felt indefinitely as numerous health conditions are passed down to the children of veterans who served.

The after effects have, in fact, been so serious that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has actually listed certain medical conditions as presumptively related to Agent Orange. The list of conditions is long, from ischemic heart disease to Parkinson’s disease, plus a wide range of different cancers such as leukemia, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, soft tissue sarcomas, and many more.

If you served in country in Vietnam from 1962 to 1975 any medical conditions  on the list of presumptive health issues are considered to be connected to your service. It’s highly recommended by the VA that you participate in an Agent Orange Registry Health Exam. While you may already be exhibiting symptoms—or have none at all—the VA points out that with this exam they can take tests and let you know if you do have health issues related to Agent Orange exposure. Not only are you helping yourself, but other veterans too, as this registry allows for the study of the data overall, allowing them to take other action and offer more help to veterans.

When you attend the exam, doctors will ask about your exposure to Agent Orange, take a medical history, and perform a medical examination, as well as order necessary tests. The exam is free, and available to you multiple times if you develop symptoms or issues later. Enrollment in the VA healthcare system is not required for you to have the exam.

If you are filing a claim for disability to Agent Orange exposure, you will need to do that separately. Find out more about who is eligible for an exam.
