The Department of Veterans Affairs provides service-connected compensation to veterans dealing with medical conditions as a result of their military service. The amount of monthly compensation a veteran receives is dependent on their combined disability rating, which is calculated to include the number of dependents they have as well as the number of medical conditions experienced by the veteran. The current VA disability compensation rates as of 2019 range from $140 to $3,057 for a single veteran with no dependents.
Determining If You May Receive Additional Benefits for Your Dependents
So, what determines whether or not you qualify for additional benefits for any dependents you may have in your home? The Department of Veteran Affairs takes into consideration a number of factors while calculating additional benefits. If your combined disability rating is 30% or higher, you are eligible to receive additional compensation when you add dependents to your VA disability benefits. These qualifying dependents can include your spouse, children under the age of 18, children between the ages of 18 and 23 still in school, or dependent parents. It is important to note that the amount of additional compensation varies between dependents.
How the VA Disability Pay Chart Works
Understanding how the VA disability chart works can be difficult, which is why we’ve provided detailed information on how to read the chart and determine what the different amounts mean for you and your particular situation.
The amounts listed in the updated chart of 2019 VA Disability Pay Rates represent the monthly financial compensation that the VA pays to those who qualify for disability benefits. The percentages across the top of the pay chart are the total combined disability ratings that you are assigned after combining the ratings of each of your conditions. It is important to note that you do not receive separate compensation for each of your service-connected conditions. Instead, you receive one monthly payment for your combined rating.
The combined ratings of 10% and 20% are not listed on the pay chart, because such ratings do not qualify for extra compensation for dependents. However, the monthly compensation amounts for those rates are $140.05 and $276.84, respectively.
If you follow across the row, you will find the corresponding amount of compensation to match each combined rating. As the combined rating increases on the chart, the amount of monthly compensation increases with it. Simply put, the higher your disability rating, the higher the compensation amount you will receive each month. Additionally, in the pay chart you can find the amount of monthly compensation you will receive for qualified dependents.
The first column represents a single veteran with no dependents. Each column thereafter represents a different combination of dependents. Once again, if you follow across the row, you will find the amount of compensation based on your combined rating that is unique to your dependency status.
The VA disability chart is divided into two sections based on qualifying dependents. Specifically, the top half of the pay chart identifies monthly compensation for veterans with a spouse or dependent parents. The bottom half of the pay chart identifies monthly VA disability rates for veterans with children under 18 years old or still in school.
