Meet Our Team: Brad Hennings

May 8, 2018

Attorney Brad Hennings has been at CCK since January. He fills many roles at Chisholm, Chisholm & Kilpatrick, including work on CCK’s Court Team – the team of attorneys and paralegals that work on cases from the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC, or the Court) – as well as our Agency Team – the team that works on cases at the Regional Office and the Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA, or the Board).

Brad’s Work at the Board and the Court

Before coming to CCK, Brad Hennings was a Veterans Law Judge at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals for three and a half years. Veterans Law Judges are appointed by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and must be approved by the President of the United States. At the Board, Brad made final decisions on behalf of the VA Secretary for veterans’ disability compensation appeals. Day-to-day, Brad was the one signing decisions, holding hearings, and working with Board attorneys to decide appeals.

Before working at the Board, Brad worked at the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, clerking for the Honorable Alan G. Lance, Sr. for two and a half years. The Court (or CAVC) reviews final Board decisions, so Brad has really been able to see the inner-workings of the Veterans Law process at many different stages of the appeals process.

Brad’s Education and Early Career

Brad majored in History at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. After college, he got a Masters in Information Systems from Stevenson Institute of Technology. He went to law school at Rutgers School of Law – Newark, New Jersey.

Law school was something Brad thought about during college, but when he graduated he didn’t want law to be a default decision, so he went to work. But with the passing of his grandfather, a World War II veteran, Brad’s thinking shifted. Near the end of his life, Brad’s grandfather told him, “I’ve had a good life. I don’t have any regrets.” Brad wanted the same for himself. So he left IT work, and started law school.

When he first graduated from law school, Brad clerked for a New Jersey State Court Judge for a year. He then worked briefly in a private practice in New Jersey, but soon moved on to become a staff attorney at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

Brad’s Family and Hobbies

At present, Brad is living on his own in Providence. But he is excited that his wife and two children will be joining him in Providence as soon as the school year ends in Washington, D.C.

In addition to his passion for Veterans Law, Brad loves making music in his free time. It’s a way for him to decompress when he feels stressed. He plays the piano, saxophone, guitar, and drums. He also knows how to use sequencers and recording equipment to bring all those instruments to life in a recording.

In total, Brad Hennings has spent over 10 years working in the VA legal system at different stages of the appeals process. We’re excited to have him on the CCK team and to apply his extensive Veterans Law knowledge and experience in the service of our veteran clients.
