What Is Depo-Provera?
Depo‐Provera, also known as Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), is a hormonal contraceptive injection with a history dating back to the 1950s. It wasn’t until 1992 that Depo‐Provera was approved for contraceptive use in the U.S. Today, the Depo-Provera birth control shot is also used for treating conditions such as endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, and certain types of cancer.
Depo‐Provera shots have been linked to an increased risk of brain tumors. In one example, a study of 18,000 women in France found that medroxyprogesterone acetate increased the risk of meningioma by five times with long-term use.
Meningioma tumors develop from the meninges, the membranes in the primary central nervous system that surround the brain and spinal cord. Meningiomas are the most common type of tumor found in the head. Meningiomas may grow slowly, sometimes over several years, before potentially causing significant disabilities.
Numerous patients are suing the drugmaker Pfizer for failing to warn of these risks. Individuals must meet certain criteria to be entitled to compensation under this Depo-Provera lawsuit.
