Senate Approves Whitehouse Bill That Helps Service Members Avoid Foreclosure
Last night the U.S. Senate unanimously approved Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s bill to keep military service members and veterans in their homes and out of foreclosure. Senator Whitehouse wanted to ensure that those who have served our country and their families are protected from foreclosure as they return to civilian life. Last year, Whitehouse authored and passed a provision that protected service members from foreclosure for a full year after leaving active duty service. The provision was due to expire at the end of this year, meaning foreclosure protections for service members would revert to just 90 days. Fortunately, the bill that passed yesterday extends the 12-month grace period through the end of 2017.
