How long will my VA appeal take? GAO issues new report on timeliness of appeals

How long will my VA appeal take?

Our office is frequently asked, “How long will my VA appeal take?”  While the answer to this question varies based on many things, we now have an idea of how long an average appeal can take from initial filing of a claim to the Board of Veteran’s Appeals decision.

GAO issues new report

The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released a report following a study of the VA’s disability benefits appeals process. This report, titled “VA Disability Benefits: Additional Planning would Enhance Efforts to Improve the Timeliness of Appeals Decisions”, outlines the VA’s current backlog in working on the appeals of Veterans and their dependents for disability benefits. The steps VA has recently undergone to help alleviate the backlog include hiring more staff and improving software used in working appeals. Additionally, VA has been developing plans for appeals process reform, which GAO recommends be pilot tested before nationwide implementation. Should VA undertake these efforts as recommended, perhaps the appeals filed by Veterans and their dependents could take less time.
